There are several signs that an electrician will look for to indicate the age of your electrical system and whether your property needs rewiring. For example, if you have a cable that is coated in black rubber - it's old. Black rubber casing was phased out in the 1960s.
A cable coated in lead or fabric is even older. Modern cables use PVC insulation. Other signs that you've got an old system: A fusebox with a wooden back, cast iron switches - look nice but they are old, more than one circuit box, round pin sockets, round light switches and electric sockets installed into skirting boards. And if you have a wall mounted light switch in bathroom, you may want to replace that whether you have the whole house rewired or not!
